Colophon imprint of William Clowes in vol. I and S. & R. Bentley in vol. II. Hayley was a poet who turned to biography with a life of Milton, published in Boydell's edition of The poetical works of John Milton, 1794--97 (q.v.) and followed by the popular and profitable The life, and posthumous writings, of William Cowper, Esq. in 1803--4; The life of George Romney, Esq., 1809 (q.v.) was less well received. His Memoirs are reviewed at length by Robert Southey in the The Quarterly Review, vol. 31, March 1825, pp. 263--311. On the verso of the dedication is a publisher's advertisement for a forthcoming edition of the Private correspondence of William Cowper, edited by Johnson and uniform with the present work. The engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in vol. I is by R. Cooper after Francis Engleheart; the frontispiece to vol. II is after George Romney. Index at end of vol. II.
