HAZLITT, William (1778--1830)
The life of Napoleon Buonaparte. By William Hazlitt. In four volumes. Vol. I (II).
London (Place), printed for Hunt and Clarke,, 1828.

I: [2], 535, [1] p.
II: [2], 572 p.

IV:
Volumes I and II only. The first two volumes (printed by James Whiting) were published by Hunt and Clarke who were bankrupted by the enterprise and it was not thought that the third and fourth volumes would get a publisher, hence, perhaps, the reason why Soane did not acquire the third and fourth volumes brought out by Effingham Wilson in 1830. Soane, who had evidently met Hazlitt after attending the last only in his series of lectures on the English poets at the Surrey Institution on 24 February 1818, shared his fascination with Napoleon.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting volumes III and IV. Purchased from Priestley and Weale on 28 August 1828 for £1 7s., discounted from £1 10s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.19, XVI.E.7.10-11).
Binding Later C19th half calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, dark green and dark blue morocco spine-labels. Bound by George Richmond ca. 1853?
