A collection of aphorisms and maxims edited by the translator Nicolas Perrot d'Ablancourt, first published in 1664. 'Les Stratagesmes De Frontin' has a half-title leaf and separate preface and table of contents, and continuous pagination and register. The title-page printed in red and black has an engraved vignette by B. Picart.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the 'Stratagesmes', i.e. all after leaf N11 (p. [310]). Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane, with a calculation in pencil on the front pastedown; the rear pastedown inscribed in pencil 1/6. Title-page inscribed in ink to the right of the vignette Du Roveray. Systematic scoring through of the French italic glosses over the first 17 pages of the text; some marking of items with a dagger between pp. 90 and 145.

Binding C18th half sheep, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-label, Kiebitzpapier decorated paper boards.
