Spelman's successful translation of Xenophon's Anabasis, intended to be more faithful to ancient thought than Pope's contemporary translation of Homer's Iliad, was first published in 1740 and remained in print for over a century. This edition includes a 'Geographical Dissertation' by R. Forster at the beginning of vol. II. With two pages of advertisements for books printed for John Nicholson and for Nicholson's circulating library at the end of vol. II. ESTC t145394.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on title-page JSoan[e] 1781, the 'e' added after 1783.
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-labels. Bound in one volume.
