First published by Hackius in 1655. The title-page is pictorial and engraved, with the printer's device of an eagle with motto 'Movendo' at head of title. The humanist classical scholar Erasmus was known for the purity of his Latin and for centuries this was one of the most used Latin schoolbooks, discussing basic scholarly and moral issues. Includes Erasmus' preface-letter to Froben at Basel, dated 1524, and 'Vita Erasmi, Erasmo Auctore' preceding the main text, and an index at the end.
Copy Notes The first two leaves of the 'Vita Erasmi' (leaves *3 and *4) are misbound between leaves 3E1 and 3E2 in the Soane copy. Bought from Thomas Boone for 3s., 24 November 1808. (Spiers Box). With Boone's codes and price in pencil on the second front free-endpaper, and another pencil cypher 4z0(?) on the rear free-endpaper.
Binding Late C17th/early C18th sheep, gilt double-ruled borders and spine, dark red morocco spine-label.
