Gibbon's miscellaneous works include letters, notes and diaries of his early studies, a number of youthful essays, previously published works and a fragment entitled Antiquities of the House of Brunswick, dated 1790 but not separately published until 1814. The Memoirs were assembled by Lord Sheffield from the six separate drafts of an autobiography which Gibbon left behind at his death. The frontispiece portrait in silhouette is 'taken from the figure of Mr. Gibbon cut with scissars by Mrs. Brown thirty years after the date of this letter [16 May 1764] ... as complete a likeness of Mr. Gibbon, as to person, face, and manner, as can be concieved; yet it was done in his absence.' (footnote to vol. I, p. 435). Includes extracts in French, with English translation. Errata at end of vol. II, followed by publisher's advertisement for Gibbon's History of the decline and fall of the Roman empire in '6 Vols. 4to. 7l. 10s.' or '12 Volumes, 8vo. 3l. 12s.', and for the final three volumes of the quarto edition or final six of the octavo edition separately 'to complete Sets'. Sig.*U1 in vol. I and 3K4 in vol. II are cancels. ESTC t79696; NCBEL II, 1723.
