John Campbell wrote a variety of historical, political, social, and economic treatises as well as some fiction, and was a member of Samuel Johnson's circle. A prospectus for the present work was published as early as 1755 but the Political survey proved to be his last work. It contained a prodigious amount of information on the economic life, trade, industry, transport, and agriculture of the country with practical suggestions for their improvement, but sales were slow and the accuracy of his information and arguments was questioned. With a separate index in each volume. The final page of vol. II contains a list of 'Books lately published by T. Durham, ...'. Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title in both volumes. In volume I the first front free-endpaper is inscribed in ink by Soane July 1796 1:10:0 and the second in pencil in another hand 1.16.0.
Binding C18th calf, gilt-tooled foliate borders, gilt guilloche roll-tooled spine, red and green morocco spine-labels.
