Purpose

Design for a ceiling for the staircase, 1765, unexecuted (1)

Notes

This ceiling design is not thought to have been executed. The current house has a staircase at the centre of the north range, installed during the works of the 1820s by Thomas Cundy. There are further staircases in the towers, but these are too small and square to have been the intended location for this ceiling design. Adam demolished the principal Tudor staircase in order to create his ante room, but the intended location of his new principal staircase is not known.
