Purpose

Preliminary designs for a rustic cottage, 1768, unexecuted (3)

Notes

Adam's scheme for a rustic cottage in in the park at Strawberry Hill was not executed.

Walpole had already built an earlier thatched cottage across the road from Strawberry Hill in 1765, providing a tea room and a small library. From the Adam office there are also five drawings within American collections, giving two alternative schemes for another rustic cottage. One design shows a two-storey cottage dated 1766, with space for a round bath, a library or study and a parlour, and with servants' rooms above. The other design shows a single-storey cottage dated 1768, comprising finished drawing versions of Adam volume 10/205-206. On the American counterpart to Adam volume 10/206, the room labelled as the library contains bookshelves lining the walls.
