Purpose

Preliminary designs, designs and finished drawing showing plans, elevations and sections for the building, c1769-76, unexecuted (7)

Notes

Adam’s designs for a church at the Adelphi were not realised.

Rowan has noted that Adam volume 44/95 is reminiscent of the work of Piranesi, most particularly the Church of S. Maria del Priorato in Rome, built for the Knights of Malta in 1764, albeit with the inclusion of Adam’s Spalatro capitals in this instance. Adam was not a religious man, and Rowan has pointed out that the inclusion of sculpted idols on the façade hardly cater to the Protestant requirements of a Church of England place of worship.
