Design for the chimneypiece for the front drawing room, c1769-70, executed with minor alterations at 3 Royal Terrace (1)
Notes
This design was not executed at number 5 Royal Terrace, and instead a marble chimneypiece was installed for which there is no extant drawing. It made use of Ionic pilaster stiles, and a very shallow plain frieze. It survived to be photographed by the LCC in 1936, and then sold at auction in the same year. The design does not correspond with Adam’s section of the house (Adam volume 42/61).
This design was installed with minor alterations in the front drawing room at number 3 Royal Terrace, and it is interesting to note that this design – rather than the executed scheme – corresponds with Adam’s section of number 5 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 42/61).
