Notes
The Jewel Tower was built between 1365-6 as a store for precious goods. Within the medieval Palace of Westminster complex it stood at the south west corner surrounded by a defensive moat. At some point in time before 1600 it was given over to the Clerk of the Parliaments and became a store for the records of the House of Lords until 1864 when the records were removed to Charles Barry's new Victoria Tower. This drawing, dated "21 April 1826", shows the second floor of the Jewel Tower "now fitted up for records". The bookcases are coloured yellow. Due to its separation from the Palace of Westminster the Jewel Tower survived the fire of 1834. It is now in the stewardship of English Heritage.
