Notes
The staircase is half-turn with landings, and is located on the principal (east) front of the house, between Adam’s dining room (later the library) and the entrance hall. We can see from Adam’s plan for the house (Adam volume 41/74) that he had intended to install an Imperial staircase, but this was not executed, perhaps on account of cost, and instead the seventeenth-century carpentry was retained. It was furnished with a balustrade designed by Adam and possibly executed by Thomas Tilson, which is now painted gold.
The ceiling in the staircase was executed in accordance with Adam’s design, and survives in situ.
