Purpose

Design for alterations to the principal (east) front, 1776, unexecuted (1)

Notes

This is the only known design which Adam made for exterior alterations at Newby Hall. It shows the addition of a portico and pediment. Neither was executed, and instead, Belwood designed and executed an entrance porch on the east front. According to Harris, Belwood’s design for the porch may have been inspired by a design by Chambers.
