Browse

SM volume 61/30
Purpose
Record drawing of the landing at the top of the Scala Regia

Notes
Having ascended the Scala Regia the procession arrives at a top-lit landing with an oval-shaped vestibule on either side. The ceiling over the landing is groin-vaulted. According to Sean Sawyer (Soane at Westminster, PhD thesis, Columbia University, 1999, p. 416 n. 1230) "the figures in Gandy's watercolours are at least half too short and Richardson's copy of vol. 61, f. 29 [in the V&A] is inscribed '...figures too small'."
