Designs for Ancaster House, 1773, executed with alterations (8)
Notes
From observation of the extant house, it appears that the fabric was executed in accordance with Adam’s drawings, but with some minor alterations. The mezzanine level with windows on the northwest front was omitted. If they were originally executed, the string course, the majority of the cornice, and the arcade and colonnade around the bow on the southeast front are all now lost. Moreover, the fenestration has been altered, and various additions were clearly made to the building in the nineteenth century, most notably the north-eastern extension and the small south-eastern wing.
