Purpose
Designs for a gateway, c1777, unexecuted
Signed and dated
- c1777
datable to c1777
Notes
Like Adam’s designs for the house, the first scheme for the M-shaped gateway at The Oaks comprised a mixture of classical and castle-style motifs, while the alternative scheme (SM Adam volume 29/37) makes additional use of the rustic style, including wood cladding. None of Adam’s designs for the gateway were executed.
