Purpose

5th scheme for the house, c1777, unexecuted

Signed and dated

  • c1777
    datable to c1777

Notes

Like the first, second, third and fourth schemes for the house, this design was not executed, and comprises an interesting mixture of castle-style and classical elements. This scheme differs from the others in its V-shape arrangement. According to Rowan, this plan was the inspiration for a castle for John Robinson at Harwich.

The pencil annotations show that this design comprised the third scheme. It is listed here as the fifth scheme as it appears to comprise the fifth scheme among the extant drawings, but the annotations suggests that it was the third scheme which was drawn out in finished drawings and presented to Lord Derby. Indeed, the intervening schemes – here listed as second and fourth – were presumably never presented to Lord Derby, or developed beyond the early design phase.
