Notes
These presentation drawings record the building as executed and are affixed in volume 61. The windows at the east end of the library are blocked up, as are the outer windows on the south front. At what stage this decision was made is not clear, but it might be explained by the need to reduce costs - the total expenditure on the building by November 1834 was £23,593 (King's Works, VI, p. 570). Alternatively, perhaps the room was overlit or more wall space was needed for shelves. The longitudinal section (drawing 184) as well as the presentation plans neatly show how the interior of the building was comparmentalised and how solid interior walls were built to prevent the spread of fire (S. Palmer, 'Sir John Soane and the design of the New State Paper Office', Archivaria, 2005, p. 56).
