Designs for St Andrew's church, 1767-68, executed with alterations (5)

Notes

St Andrew's church at Gunton is the only example of a church being built from scratch to a design by Robert Adam, and it was completed and consecrated in 1769. It is important to note, however, that alterations were made to Adam's designs in execution. The apse at the east end was not built, and instead the east end is a straight wall with three blind windows. Adam's proposed box pews were either not executed, or have been removed; and the original pulpit, stalls and pews have since been cut down, and all the furniture was rearranged in 1894.

The plasterwork ceiling was executed to an Adam design, albeit not that shown in the section (Adam volume 43/43), and the drawing is lost. The ceiling collapsed in 1976 and has been replaced with an exact replica.
