Preliminary design and finished drawing for a chimneypiece for the middle bedroom, executed with alterations, 1783 (2)
Notes
The middle bedroom on the first floor of the house was occupied by Mansfield's nieces, with Lord and Lady Mansfield's bedrooms to either side. But the date, and the inclusion of fine carving in this chimneypiece suggests that it was redesigned by Adam after it was no longer in use as a nursery.
Both of these designs are similar to the executed chimneypiece in the middle bedroom, but with alterations. The executed design makes use of the paired Ionic pilaster stiles, and the capitals contain oval medallions as in Adam volume 24/161, but the frieze is not fluted, and has no tablet. Instead it is ornamented with rosettes, calyx, beading, and anthemia.
