Notes

Isabella Elizabeth Helene Anne Czartoriska (1736-1816) who was from one of the leading families of Vienna, married Stanislas, Prince Lubomirski (1722-83), the Grand Marshall of Poland, in 1753. The Princess is known to have been in London with Lady Pembroke in 1787, and breakfasted at Strawberry Hill with Horace Walpole on 25th July 1787. It was presumably while Lubomirska was in England that Adam designed a villa for her. Rowan has noticed that this design is a miniature version of Milburn, Surrey, designed in 1786 for the 1st Lord Delaval (1728-1808) (SM Adam volume 46/1-4). The villa was not executed but Rowan has suggested that it was intended as a trianon for the Grand Marshall's estate at Łańcut, Rzeszów, Poland, where the Princess had refitted the main house in 1780.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
