Notes
This study probably belongs to Robert Adam's period in Italy and can be associated with several other designs in a sixteenth-century style (see particularly Adam vol.54/3-20). In Adam volume 57, there are two capricci with an obelisk as a theme, Adam vol.57/128 and 57/148. The pencil decoration of the plinth here is shown in a curious Romanesque style of decorated arches. In Adam vol.6/90 there is a drawing of a bath in a similar style that is misdated 1744.
