Notes
Drawings 38-42 show designs for the new Privy Council Offices on the site of the old Council Chamber, to the west of the Board of Trade (q.v. drawings 3-5). Drawings 38, 39 and 42 show a building with rooms built around a central corridor that ends with a geometrical staircase. In drawings 40 and 41 the building is narrower with the corridor on the west side ending with an open-newel staircase. Offices in the Home Department (to the right of the drawings) include those of the Home Secretary, Robert Peel (1788-1850), and Sir Richard Birnie (c.1760-1832), a police magistrate famous for his role in the arrest of the Cato Street conspirators.
