Purpose
Record drawing for a chimneypiece for the first drawing room, c1771, unexecuted (1)
Notes
This is the only surviving Adam drawing for a chimneypiece at Chandos House. Moreover, it is the only drawing for which the inscription was added prior to its purchase by the Duke of Chandos (Adam volumes 13/51-56 are inscribed as being for Chandos House).
This design for the first drawing room chimneypiece was not executed. The executed chimneypiece in the first drawing room does make use of stiles ornamented with anthemia enclosed within figure-of-eight ribbons, but is otherwise to an alternative design.
