Finished drawing and record drawings for a greenhouse, c1762-92, unexecuted (3)
Notes
The plan (Adam volume 30/94) shows a flue within the back wall, and appears to show double-glazed windows, suggesting that it was intended as a hot house for exotic plants.
The balustraded roof (Adam volume 30/92) suggests a viewing platform at roof level, but no staircase is shown in the plan (Adam volume 30/94), and therefore, the balustrade may be purely ornamental.
The greenhouse is not known to have been executed, and these designs may have been made at any time from Sir Edward Dering's succession in 1762. The design is, however, comparable to the greenhouses which Adam designed during the early years of his practice for Croome Court and Kedleston Hall. It is likely, therefore, that this greenhouse design was made during the 1760s.
