This drawing was probably made during Robert Adam and Charles-Louis Clérisseau's trip to Albano in September 1755, when they may also have drawn the Tempio della Salute in Adam vol.57/123 and 57/127. The building with the campanile is probably Santa Maria della Stella. Adam's sketch is much less dramatic than the print by Piranesi of 1745/8 in Alcune Vedute di Archi Trionfali, although the viewpoint is similar to Piranesi's later Antichità di Albano e di Castel Gandolfo, 1764-8, pls.V and VI. Adam also owned Bartoli's Gli Antichi Sepolchri, 1697, which illustrates this view. A more detailed version of the view attributed to Clérisseau is found in Adam vol.57/134.
