Purpose
Preliminary design and finished drawing for a pier glass frame for an unknown room, 1771, as executed (2)
Signed and dated
- 1771
Notes
Mirror frames with an urn flanked by female figures seated on acanthus scrolls became typical of Adam's mature style, but they first appeared in 1771 at Paul Methuen’s at Corsham Court, and here at 10 Hertford Street.
The intended location of the pier glass/s is unknown, although it is likely that they were installed in the back drawing room, as their scale corresponds with Adam pier glass mirror frames from that room which were sold in the 1792 sale of Burgoyne's belongings at Christie's (see scheme notes).
