Design for a chimneypiece for the front drawing room, 1769 (1)

Notes

Adam's interior decorative schemes for the ceilings and chimneypieces at 25 Grosvenor Square are thought to have been executed, but this work must have been removed later as there was no evidence of an Adam interior prior to the demolition of the house in 1957. See scheme notes.

The pencil inscription on this drawing, D[urham] Y[ar]d / Front Drawing room, suggests that Adam had intended to reuse the design at the Adelphi, as was the case with various other chimneypiece designs of the 1760s. Indeed a close variant copy of this design was made for the front drawing room at 4 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/33), corresponding with the pencil inscription.
