Notes
This view of the ruined Temple of the Vesta is a more accurate one than that in Adam vol.57/85. The viewpoint is similar to that of Piranesi's print of 1761 in the Vedute di Roma, 'Altra veduta del tempio della Sibilla in Tivoli.'. [Another vue of the Temple of Sibyl at Tivoli] which also shows the subterranean vaulting. There is a similar view by Charles-Louis Clérisseau, but without the framing vault, in the Clerk Collection, Scotland (Clerk 122). Two views byJean-Baptiste Lallemand are also found in the Clerk Collection (Clerk 119 and 192), which show the ruined temple from a similar angle to this drawing, using the top of the supporting vaulting as a foreground.
