Notes
This view by Robert Adam is probably taken from below the Circus Maximus looking towards the ruins of the Palatine in Rome. It may be compared with part of a contemporary pen and wash drawing reproduced in R. Keaveney, Views of Rome, London, 1988, p.98, and the composition in Adam vol.57/59. The device of the diagonal tree appears in Robert Adam's views in Adam vol.57/61, and vol.57/50-57/52. Both its inclusion and the form given to the cypress trees are typical of Jean-Baptiste Lallemand's lessons and should be compared with the latter's drawings in Adam vol.57/56 and vol.57/57.
