Notes
Although attributed here to Jean-Baptiste Lallemand, it is possible that this drawing is by Robert Adam in the latter's style given the choice of paper and heightening; however, the style and the treatment of the sky are unlike either artist. There is a drawing similar in style and subject-matter in the Clerk Collection, Scotland (Clerk 65). The use of pencil framing lines occurs in several drawings of this Roman period. The view probably shows part of the remaining piers of one of the aqueducts, for example the Aqua Claudia.
