Notes
Of the several gateways to Rome that survived in the eighteenth century, this drawing by Robert Adam is close to the Porta Appia. The view is taken from underneath the Arch of Drusus looking towards the inner court, although the square tower should be shown with battlements (see E. Nash, Pictorial Dictionary of Ancient Rome, London, 1968, vol.II, p.198). There is a more conventional view of the arch, the gateway and inner court in the Clerk Collection, Scotland (Clerk 45).
