An etching by Piranesi (see Le Antichità Romane, 1756, vol.1, XVII, Fig. 1) may have inspired Robert Adam's drawing of this reservoir, which was destroyed in 1879. Adam's more pedestrian rendition is taken from a similar viewpoint to that of Piranesi, although the setting is different and there is no sight of the Porta Maggiore or the Acqua Marcia.
