Design for a chimneypiece, possibly for the back drawing room, 1766 (1)

Notes

Adam's designs for the interior of 34 Pall Mall are thought to have been executed in accordance with his extant drawings, but the house was demolished at an unknown date, and there is no photographic record.

Within the context of other chimneypiece designs of the 1760s which are inscribed in pencil in a similar way, it is possible that the pencil inscription on this drawing, 8t House / Back Parlor, might suggest that Adam had intended to reuse the design at the Adelphi. This particular design, however, does not correspond with any of the surviving chimneypiece designs for the Adelphi.
