Purpose

Preliminary design for a house, 1761-63, unexecuted (1)

Notes

This drawing shows a house of a scale too large to be related to Adam's other two designs made for Lord Shelburne at Berkeley Square or Hyde Park Corner on Pall Mall. This appears to be a very early design for alterations to Bowood, with much of the original house surviving within the proposed central block, albeit with alterations to the fronts, and the addition of two flanking wings. This design proposes considerable alterations to the house, and was not executed.
