Notes
This view may depict the towered Temple of Apollo at Pozzuoli (see the engraving of a drawing by Natali in Paoli, Avanzi Delle Antichita Esistenti a Pozzuoli Cuma e Baja, Naples, 1768, pl.XXVII). There are possibly other versions of this view in Adam vol.57/26 and 57/30; the latter may be by Charles-Louis Clérisseau. The pencil framing line is contemporary with the drawing and this suggests that this was one of the drawings Adam selected for 'our friends to partake of our pleasures' (J. Fleming, Robert Adam and his Circle in Edinburgh & Rome, London, 1962, p.156).
