Designs for villa A, May-July 1800 (3)

Notes

Drawings 1 and 2 are variant plans for a villa at Acton showing Soane's revisions on drawings made by pupils. Drawing 1 is the earlier version with several pencil revisions, that are realised in drawing 2, including an alteration to the main staircase layout and the removal of a wall in the upper left-hand room.

Drawing 3 shows a corresponding elevation of villa A. It is symmetrical in layout with three central bays and projecting vestigial wings on either side, both of which have semicircular niches framed by pilasters. The outer wings are surmounted by semicircular pediments with scallop shell decoration. Below the mansard roof there is a dentilled cornice and on top of the roof there is a decorative sarcophagus-like lantern which repeats on a smaller scale the fluted pilaster and shell motifs.
