Notes

This sheet is different from the stanze set, which uses watercolour, but it is similar to a pen and brown wash drawing for the grotesque decoration of a lunette, although the penwork on the figures is different (see P. Fuhring, Design into Art, Drawings for Architecture and Ornament, 2 vols., London, 1989, I, p.61). The same inscription, in the same hand, appears in Adam vol.26/22.
