This design for the mace and that for the Lord Chancellor's seal (see Adam vol.7/20) are part of James Adam's Parliament House scheme of 1763. This mace is shown in the Speaker scenes in Adam vol.7/24 and 25, and in the sculpture group in 7/37. The handwriting is probably that of James Adam, and the neat and painstaking draughtsmanship is also likely to be his.
