Notes
The elements of a castle with bridge and watermill all appear in Adam vol.54/Series 5/8 and are probably derived from a late seventeenth-century landscape print (see A. A. Tait, Robert Adam: drawings and imagination, Cambridge, 1993, pp.10-13). This composition is in the style of Robert Adam's earlier Blair Adam drawings found in volume 56 and like 54/Series 5/8 it can be compared with the large watercolour compositions in Adam vol.56/5 and 8; it may then be dated to the early 1750s although the castle can also be compared with that in Adam vol.54/Series 5/19.
