Purpose

Working drawings for the drawing room chimney-piece, March 1790 (3)

Notes

Drawing 8 has a note that some of the ornament be omitted in execution: the Vitruvian scroll moulding and the ribbon to the jambs. Additionally, cancellation marks show that the tablet in the centre of the frieze was to be omitted and the cornice was to become much plainer so that flutes and egg and dart moulding were done away with, and the two types of rosette were omitted from the soffit of the corona. A note of 'present dimensions of old Marble' suggests that existing chimney-pieces were being re-used.
