Working drawings for the library, 1789-90 (2)
Notes
The library is 24 feet 4 inches by 14 feet 9 inches; a pedimented bookcase has been added either side of the new chimney-piece on the north wall and another on the shorter east wall between two panelled doors (one a cupboard). The verso of drawing 3 has an elegant design for the ceiling cornice: egg and dart above flutes separated by pointed fillets and below, a row of Soane's favourite balls. The restrained design for the chimney-piece (drawing 4) relies on plain surfaces except for the fluted jambs and frieze; white marble veined in blue was chosen and the cost was twenty guineas.
