Purpose

Design for picture frames, 1784, possibly executed (1)

Notes

This design for a composition of frames is interesting as it incorporates oval and round frames comparable to Adam volume 20/253-254. Boydell commissioned Gilbert Stuart to produce fifteen portraits of artists and engravers associated with his print business. Three such portraits are apparent in Adam volume 20/253. It is likely that this design was made with the Stuart commission in mind. See scheme notes.
