Design for an entrance screen, April 1794 (3)
Notes
Soane's rough preliminary elevation (drawing 45) and preliminary plan show a design that is close to the executed design except for the treatment of the parapets that are shown here as continuous and without the addition of short blocking courses and also without the strigilated chimney pots. The drawings were made while Soane was at Tyringham on 14 April 1794 (Journal No 2). Drawing 46 has a working drawing for a section, in Soane's hand, of the building's foundation piers and the floor levels. His inscription states that the floor is to be 3 feet above Turnpike Road. See drawing 22 for a plan of the grounds, showing the entrance screen's orientation in relation to the main Turnpike Road.
