Purpose

[12] Design for a carpet for the dining room, 1778, possibly executed

Aspect

Plan of a tripartite carpet, with a central square compartment, ornamented with a rosette, encircled by a fan and a band of guilloche. This is enclosed within an octagonal border of Vitruvian scroll and beyond this there are panels ornamented with festoons, and corner wreaths containing urns. The central compartment is flanked by rectangular strip compartments ornamented with rosettes, enclosed within a contiguous hexagonal band. The compartments are bordered by bands of fret with corner rosettes
