Working drawings for chimney-pieces, April 1792 (3)
Notes
The office Day Book for 9 April 1792 shows that Soane took nine drawings to Moggerhanger including three drawings for chimney-pieces. The three drawings catalogued here are filed with many other designs for chimney-pieces making it easier for Soane's office to retrieve and re-use or adapt designs for further jobs.
Mrs Thornton's chimney-piece is of black and white marble with ormolu mouldings (circular on plan) to the panelled frieze and jambs. The drawing room design uses a floreated Vitruvian scroll moulding to decorate the frieze and jambs while the bedroom chimney-piece has ribboned festoons and urn for the frieze and cabled fluting for the jambs.
