Designs close to the final design, from June 1784 (5)

Notes

Drawing 11 is dated 'June 1784' and it is assumed that drawings 12-14 followed soon after. Demolition of the old rectory began early in July 1784. Soane's Account book 1781-1786, has an entry for 5 July that states 'Barnes to begin / pulling down on Monday the 5th'. Construction work began a month later.

Drawings 14 and 15 are close to the executed design which does not have the string course shown in these elevations. In the course of building, dripping eaves were substituted for the cornice with blocking course shown on the drawing.

The rough plan on the verso of drawing 14 may be related to Soane's unexecuted scheme for estate housing at Hammels Park, Herfordshire, 1784 (SM 28/1/20 verso) q.v.

Drawing 15 is dated by Bailey (and thus added after 1806 when he first entered Soane's office) '178' in pen is followed by a feint pencil '7' which suggests that he was uncertain of the date.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.

Browse (via the vertical menu to the left) and search results for Drawings include a mixture of Concise catalogue records – drawn from an outline list of the collection – and fuller records where drawings have been catalogued in more detail (an ongoing process).
