Presentation drawings of the drawing room, for exhibition at the Royal Academy, 1792 (2)

Notes

The drawings show the interior of the drawing room hung with Hardwicke's paintings, consisting of classical landscapes and grisailles. As David Adshead writes, the design predates Lady Hardwicke's decision to have the walls hung with silk (see drawing 23).

David Adshead records that English decorative painters John and Frederick Crace (1754-1819 and 1779-1859, respectively) worked for Soane at Wimpole between 1791 and 1794, mainly for work at the house.

The framed drawing, P410 (drawing 22), is part of a composite drawing exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1792. It is framed with a perspective of the Music Room at Bentley Priory (P409, q.v.) and the Rotunda vestibule at the Bank of England (P408, q.v.)

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
