Purpose

Preliminary designs and finished drawings for a castellated house, 1783, unexecuted (7)

Notes

These designs are for an unexecuted five-block house, composed of a central block with quadrant wings attached by link walls enclosing courtyards. Conical rooms at the top of the end-bay towers in the central block, as seen in Adam volumes 10/76, 37/117 and 46/141, are highly unusual within the Adam style.

Rowan has pointed out that the arcade of relieving arches on the central tower, as seen in Adam volumes 37/117 and 46/141, is similar to that used on the central tower ofCulzean Castle (SM Adam volume 37/1).
